MODA SCHOOL

Fashion is a craft before it is a feeling. We teach the craft.

La escuela

How the school works

01

The atelier method: make, unmake, remake

A garment is made once for speed and understanding, then deliberately unmade — unpicked, re-cut, re-fit — to see where the first attempt was wrong. Remaking it a second time is where the technique actually lands. Nothing is graded on the first try alone.

02

Small cohorts

Every cohort is kept small enough that the weekly crit can give real, specific attention to every piece on the wall — not a lecture hall, a working studio. Small also means the tools, machines, and stand time are never queued for.

03

Craft before trend

Trend forecasting is not on the syllabus. Pattern drafting, draping, construction, and fit are — the transferable skills that outlast whatever silhouette is fashionable this season. A trend you can chase; a technique you keep.

Programs

The runway

Five programs, each treated as a "look" — a discipline you build, season by season, until it is technique rather than taste. Founding cohort, concept stage: enrollment interest opens below.

  • LOOK 01

    Pattern & Construction

You build a personal sloper — the fitted base block every other pattern descends from — then learn dart manipulation to move that fit into darts, seams, and gathers. By term's end you can flat-pattern a garment from a sketch, not just copy one.

  • LOOK 02

    Draping

Pattern-making on the stand, not the paper: pinning muslin directly onto a dress form to find shape by hand before it's ever reduced to a flat block. You learn how bias behaves, where a seam wants to fall, and why some silhouettes can only be found this way.

  • LOOK 03

    Textiles & Materials

Fiber content, weave and knit structure, drape and hand — the vocabulary for choosing a fabric that will actually behave the way your pattern assumes. Includes sourcing practice: reading a mill's spec sheet, ordering swatches, and costing yardage.

  • LOOK 04

    Fashion Illustration & Portfolio

Croquis proportion and gesture, rendering fabric weight and texture in a fast sketch, then translating illustration into clean technical flats a patternmaker can actually work from. The term ends with a sequenced portfolio built to show range, not just favorites.

  • LOOK 05

    The Business of a Label

Costing a garment from fabric to finished unit, the tradeoffs between small-batch domestic production and overseas manufacturing, and the basics of wholesale versus direct-to-consumer. Not a guarantee of a business — a working map of the decisions one requires.

El método

Four stations, every week

Every project in the program moves through the same four stations, in the same order. The weekly crit — station four — is the ritual the whole method is built around.

  1. 01

    Observe

Before a single line is drawn, you look — at construction, at how fabric falls on a moving body, at what a garment is actually doing structurally. Observation is graded, not assumed.

  2. 02

    Draft

The idea becomes a pattern: a sloper adjusted, a drape translated to paper, a flat corrected against a spec. This is where taste meets geometry and usually loses the first round.

  3. 03

    Construct

Muslin first, then fabric. You sew your own samples — construction is not outsourced to a machinist you never meet. Mistakes here are the fastest teacher in the program.

  4. 04

    Critique

The weekly crit is the program's centerpiece ritual: work pinned to a wall, discussed in the room, defended out loud. Uncomfortable by design — it's the closest rehearsal for a real studio you'll get before you're in one.

Trends expire.
Technique compounds.

Moda School is at concept stage — a curriculum built, a method defined, no doors open yet. What's below is a way to register interest, not a seat: an honest first step, not a sales pitch.
